How to Scan a Document to PDF on iPhone

Someone asks you to “just send a PDF” of a signed form, and the form is on paper. Your iPhone can turn it into a clean PDF in under a minute. There are two ways to do it: the scanner built into iOS, and a dedicated scanner app.

Option 1: The Notes app

iOS has a document scanner built into Notes:

  1. Open Notes and start a new note.
  2. Tap the camera button and choose Scan Documents.
  3. Hold your iPhone over the page. It takes the page automatically when it finds it, or you can tap the shutter.
  4. Scan any other pages, then tap Save.
  5. Tap the scan, then the Share button, to send it as a PDF.

The Files app has the same scanner: tap the ⋯ button in a folder and choose Scan Documents, and the PDF is saved straight into that folder.

This works well for an occasional scan. The scans live inside a note, though, so after a while they’re hard to find among everything else in Notes, and there are only a few options for how the page looks.

Option 2: A scanner app

A dedicated app makes sense when you scan regularly: tax papers, receipts, school forms, contracts. Here’s how it works in Copier:

  1. Open the camera. Tap the Scan button. The page’s outline appears around it as soon as it’s in view.
  2. Hold still. With Auto on, the page is taken after you’ve held steady for about a second. Use Batch to scan several pages one after another.
  3. Check the pages. Each page is found, straightened and cleaned up in the background. Swipe through them, and hold Compare to see the page before it was cleaned up.
  4. Pick a look. Auto for most documents, Black & white for text, Original for photos. Tap the picked look again to set how strong it is. With Apply to all pages on, one choice covers the whole document.
  5. Fix anything. Crop a page by hand, rotate it, retake it, or delete it.
  6. Save, then share as PDF. Your document goes into your library. Tap Share, pick PDF, and send it with Mail, Messages, AirDrop, or save it to Files.

Copier places each page on an A4 sheet in the PDF, turned to landscape for wide pages, so it prints the way you’d expect.

Getting a PDF that people can read

What about privacy?

The documents you scan are often the most sensitive paper you own: IDs, medical letters, bank statements, contracts. Before you choose a scanner app, check whether it uploads your pages to a server to process them, and whether it needs an account.

Copier finds, straightens and cleans each page on your iPhone itself. There’s no account, no analytics, and nothing is uploaded. Your documents stay on your phone until you share them yourself.

Is it free?

Scanning and sharing pages as JPG is free in Copier, for up to 10 documents. PDF export and unlimited documents come with Copier Pro, available as a single lifetime purchase, so there’s no subscription you have to keep paying for.
